Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has introduced a significant paradox in higher education by simultaneously enhancing learning accessibility, personalization, and academic confidence while creating concerns regarding reduced cognitive effort and technological dependency. This study explores how university students navigate AI-supported learning experiences by examining five key dimensions: learning convenience, cognitive effort, digital content influence, academic confidence, and educational engagement. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study investigates the lived experiences of 18 Pakistani university students through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify patterns within students’ perceptions and practices of AI use. The findings reveal six major themes: AI as an educational accelerator, convenience versus intellectual struggle, confidence versus competence, transformation of digital learning consumption, risks of AI dependency, and purposeful AI-supported learning. The study demonstrates that AI can enhance educational engagement when used as a cognitive partner but may weaken independent learning when relied upon excessively. The findings highlight the importance of AI literacy, responsible technology integration, and pedagogical strategies that preserve students’ cognitive autonomy while maximizing the benefits of AI in higher education.
